Web Design Usability Issues – Logics and Concepts

With the introduction of various advanced technologies and with multivariate testing, it is easy to maintain a multifunctional and error-free website nowadays. However, some of the most obvious usability issues in web design often get ignored.

When we talk about usability issues in the website, we directly mean the users have lots many points to think over before browsing. Therefore attention to such navigation matters is equally important as the presentation and design of the webpage.

The usability of a website is all about making browsing and surfing easier with less thinking and less frustration. To elaborate and to ensure your website is safe from such issues, here are 4 common usability issues you must work on to avoid any hindrance to your online business success.

 #1 Small Fonts for Hyperlinks

The clickable texts called hyperlinks must be placed on the webpage with a font size that is good enough for easy clicking. The small font size is not only tough to locate but is comparatively harder to click because our hand movement with the mouse isn’t very precise and therefore, the larger clickable text/area makes it much easier to hover the mouse cursor over the hypertext/link.

So based on the logic of the hyperlinks “i.e. must be easily clickable”, the font size should be taken care of by the web design company.

#2 Unwanted Pagination

Pagination refers to the division of content into several numbers of web pages. These are generally used for websites /webpages displaying a long list of products or pictures as making the webpage longer can create a slow download of the website and also not good in terms of navigation, so for the ease of the website users, the pagination is created to split the listings to various pages.

But the recent survey report says that pagination is also being used as the articles/blogs display. When the articles/blogs are too lengthy, the web developers split them into a number of pages, and with the help of pagination, the users read the entire stuff avoiding the long scroll. And secondly, webmasters also prefer such acts for more page views for better ad results on their web pages.

But from the users’ point of view, it was found annoying to scroll several pages to read one article. Moreover, if you see it from a search engine optimization point of view too, it is not logical. Therefore, it is concluded that pagination usage should be limited to the concept of products/items/pictures display for a logical and search engine-friendly website.

#3 Duplicate page titles

The title of the webpages is written in between the <title> tag at the top of the page in the HTML code. And so most of the time, the web designers and web developers write the website name or the business name while developing the site and then re-use the same title across the website for all the webpages. And that in turn not only creates duplicity but is a great hindrance to the webpage’s success.

Page titles act as the short summary of the whole content of the webpage, so it is important to define the page title of each page based on the content of the related webpage as the user gets a lot of information from the title about what the webpage is all about. And the title is not only displayed on the webpage but is also indexed by the search engine as your webpage title. Therefore, writing the title tag is extremely important and too specific for each webpage.

#4 Old Permalinks pointing Nowhere

Permalink is a link to a page that is not meant to be changed. For example – a link to a blog or article page of the website. The issues come when the existing website is restructured or has its domain name changed. If the permalinks are not redirected to the new webpages/restored URLs, they take the users to a dead page and lead to nowhere or to a “404 error” page.

The redirection of such an old permalink is called 301 redirects. This command is stored on a server that redirects the users to the appropriate pages.

There can be more points of usability issues in the website design other than above as only a few common points are covered in the above article. But the concept of every issue is common i.e. “ Taking care of users’ point of view” while designing a website or an online business model. These issues are taken care of completely if you choose a good website design company in Singapore.
